The Honda Acty HA6 (2WD) and HA7 (4WD) ran from 1999 to 2009, powered by the 660cc E07Z three-cylinder. They’re lighter and more nimble than a Suzuki Carry or Daihatsu Hijet, and the Honda engineering shows in places like the door hinges, window mechanisms, and interior fit. But they also have some recurring problems Canadian owners should know about.
The E07Z is an interference engine. If the timing belt breaks, the valves hit the pistons. Replace the timing belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, and water pump as a kit every 80,000 km or 8 years — whichever comes first. Don’t negotiate on this one. If a truck’s service history is unknown, replace the timing belt before putting a single kilometre on it. The full kit runs around $350 and takes about 4–6 hours in a shop with the right tools.
Canadian humidity and winter salt corrosion attack Honda Acty fuel injectors more than other kei trucks — something about the E07Z injector design. Symptoms: rough idle, misfires on cold start, occasional cough under load. Cleaning helps; replacement is the permanent fix. Factor $300–$500 for a full set if yours are struggling.
The E07Z throttle body accumulates carbon inside the throttle plate, causing rough idle and inconsistent cold start. Clean it annually with throttle body cleaner. If it’s bad enough that cleaning doesn’t work, a replacement runs about $220 and solves it permanently.
Pre-2002 HA6/HA7 trucks use a distributor. The cap and rotor wear out and cause misfires, especially in wet weather. Replace annually — cheap insurance, about $45 for the pair.
The HA7 4WD front CV joints use relatively thin boot material that cracks within a year or two of Canadian winter use. Inspect annually. Once a boot tears, grease escapes, grit gets in, and the CV joint is on a quick path to failure. A split boot kit is $55 in our catalogue — an ounce of prevention.
Around 60,000–80,000 km the release bearing starts whining when the pedal is pressed. It’s a signal to do the full clutch job at the next opportunity — disc, pressure plate, release bearing, pilot bearing. While you’re in there, replace the flywheel bolts and inspect the crank seal. Full clutch kit runs about $350.
Honda Acty tail light lenses develop gasket failure and fill with water. Besides looking bad, it blows out the bulbs and eventually rusts the contact plates. Replace the gasket or replace the whole assembly. We stock OEM-equivalent tail light assemblies.
Any Acty in Canada for more than 5 winters starts showing slow heater core coolant weeps. Symptoms: coolant smell inside, fogged windows that won’t clear, slow coolant loss. The heater core replacement is a dashboard-out job — not hard, but takes 6–8 hours. Plan for it.
Canadian Acty rust tends to start in:
Inspect all of these annually. Treat any bubbling before it becomes a hole.
The factory wiper motor uses carbon brushes that wear out in the 120,000–150,000 km range. When your wipers get sluggish in winter slush, it’s usually brushes, not the linkage. Replace the whole motor — it’s cheap (~$85) and easier than rebuilding.
